Cultural Appreciation

Each month our expert film buff endeavours to show us a film of her choice in Bangor or at the Queen’s Film Theatre, Belfast.  On occasions, if we go to Belfast, we may have a meal beforehand or afterwards when we can discuss the film.  See the Magazine for details.

2nd Tuesday in month / 6.00pm for 6.30pm / Marquis Hall, Abbey Street, Bangor

1st & 3rd Thursday in month / 2.00pm - 4 00pm

ad hoc

We follow themes, both local and farther afield, often using a variety of approaches.  Last year many members researched and reported on the lives of their favourite historical characters, with some entertaining and thought-provoking results.  During our busy programme we have frequent field trips and an annual Christmas party based on the current theme.

1st Tuesday in month / 10.30am - 12.30pm / The Curve, Bangor Library  (see Magazine for any changes)

Since the group started in 2013, we have explored the Italian, French, Spanish, Dutch, German and English schools.  By the end of 2016 we will have researched many artists from the Byzantine period to recent times, including modern movements such as Cubism, Surrealism and Abstract.  From January 2017 we will be taking ten different art schools, each month looking at various aspects of their work, for example portraits, kitchens, landscapes, politics, eyes and fashion.  Each member undertakes their own research and brings a PowerPoint presentation of no more than ten minutes to the meeting.  Anyone interested in this group should contact the Convenor.

2nd Tuesday in month / 2.30pm - 4.30pm / Convenor's home

From time to time we visit exhibitions, usually of art but sometimes of general interest, locally or in Belfast.  We occasionally make longer journeys, for example to Dublin.  Visits are nearly always guided.

Ad hoc at various venues  (see Magazine, but contact the Convenor as exhibitions may not coincide with publication)

Our expert tutor has introduced us to many composers and their music.  The programme is varied and includes talks with tapes and CDs covering jazz, film, opera and even pop. Everyone is welcome to enjoy an afternoon relaxing, listening to the varied programme, regardless of musical knowledge.  A smaller group attends the BBC Lunchtime Concerts and Summer Invitation Concerts; see the Message Board on the Home page for details.

3rd Friday in month / 2.00pm - 4.00pm / The Curve, Bangor Library

The 'Odeon Oldsters' were formed from Music Appreciation members who attend operas and ballets which are video-linked into the Odeon cinema from the Royal Opera House, Sydyey Opera House, Sadler's Wells and the Bolshoi Theatre.

Our meetings open with the study and discussion of the thoughts and perspectives of ancient and modern philosophers.  This is followed by discussion of topics which reflect issues and concerns relevant to today.  No previous knowledge of philosophy is required.

3rd Wednesday in month / 2.30pm - 4.30pm / The Curve, Bangor Library
